The Labour Party Keir StarmerBritain’s new prime minister said Saturday that the resounding victory in the general election has given his party “a clear mandate” to govern “for change” in the four nations of the United Kingdom.
Speaking at a press conference at Downing Street following meeting his newly formed cabinet for the first time, Starmer said his government would implement “a policy in this country that works” for its citizens.
Labour won a landslide victory in the early general election held in this country last Thursday, with 412 seats (out of a total of 650), where the Tories suffered their worst defeat in their history, with only 121 MPs.
Starmer revealed that at this first meeting with his team of ministers he told them “how to implement the plans we have detailed in our election manifesto” as well as detailing “exactly” what he expects “in terms of standards, execution and the trust the country has placed in them.”
Among his most immediate plans, the new head of the Executive announced that he will visit the four nations of this country following the “clear mandate” sent from all of them at the polls.
“For the first time in over 20 years, we have a majority in England, Scotland and Wales and this is a clear mandate to govern in all four corners of the United Kingdom and that is why I am leaving tomorrow to be in all four nations,” he said.
The tour, he explained, will begin in Scotland, continue in Northern Ireland, then pass through Wales and return to England in order to “establish a way of working across the United Kingdom, which will be different and better than it has been in recent years.”
The Labour leader said he would not rest until he achieved the change that the people voted for and said that this government had a “service mentality. Our country comes first, and the party comes second. And that is not a slogan. It is what our decisions are based on.”
As for future plans, he was very clear in saying that the controversial immigration plan of the previous Conservative government, the so-called ‘Rwanda plan’ (to deport to that country future asylum seekers who enter the UK by boat across the English Channel), is “dead and buried”.
Starmer has surrounded himself with the heavyweights of his team when he was in opposition as senior ministers in the Labour government, with Angela Rayner as number two and Rachel Reeves as finance minister.
David Lammy is the new foreign minister, John Healey will head defence, Yvette Cooper will take over as home secretary and Labour’s campaign coordinator Pat McFadden will head the Cabinet Office as chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster.
