Keir Starmer is the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom: he has already been commissioned by King Charles III to form a government

London.-Labour leader Keir Starmer was tasked on Friday by King Charles III with forming a government as the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, following holding an audience with the sovereign at Buckingham Palace, the official residence of the royal family in London.

Starmer will now drive to the government headquarters in Downing Street, which will now be his official residence and office, where he will give his first address to the nation as head of government following achieving a historic absolute majority in the general elections held this Thursday.

King Charles III has officially appointed Starmer as the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, following a meeting at Buckingham Palace that completed the traditional protocol choreography following a general election.

During his audience with the King, a constitutional procedure required following a general election, the sovereign asked the victor to form a new government, which in this case puts an end to 14 consecutive years of conservative governments.

Firstly, the outgoing Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, paraded through the palace, admitting in a public appearance that his party had clearly lost in the elections and even announcing that he would resign as Tory leader.

After Sunak, it is now Starmer’s turn, the clear winner of Thursday’s election. The Labour Party has obtained 412 seats, compared to the 121 won by the Conservative Party, according to the official results that are almost complete –with two seats still to be distributed–.

Starmer will now move into 10 Downing Street, the prime minister’s official residence. Among his first tasks is to form his new cabinet, which will include some of the Labour Party members who won a seat in the elections.

Accompanied by his wife Victoria, the 61-year-old former human rights lawyer, who entered politics only nine years ago, was welcomed for regarding half an hour at Buckingham Palace.

Starmer on Friday became the first knighted politician to become British Prime Minister since Conservative Alec Douglas-Home in 1963.

Among other duties, the Labour leader had a notable role as a prosecutor in cases involving trials of terrorists and organised crime gangs.

Labour won a landslide victory in yesterday’s election, winning 412 seats, 211 more than in 2019, thus ending fourteen years of Conservative government.Infobae.
