Peruvian opposition leader and former presidential candidate Keiko Fujimori expressed on Saturday her “total support and solidarity” with Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado and called for the release of political prisoners in that country, such as Williams Dávila.
In messages shared on the social network X, Fujimori expressed his solidarity with “the brave Venezuelan people who are in the streets fighting for their freedom, despite the harsh attacks of the dictator (Nicolás) Maduro.”
“We will continue to support them firmly until they recover their country and can reunite with their families,” added the leader of the Fuerza Popular party on the day of the global march called by Machado to demand respect for the presidential elections in Venezuela, which she claims was won by her candidate Edmundo González Urrutia.
Likewise, the former Peruvian congresswoman added, in another message, that they are praying “for the freedom of political prisoners like Williams Dávila,” for all of Venezuela, and for the defense of the popular will expressed at the polls that declared Edmundo González as president-elect.
Similarly, the Fujimori party shared a statement in which it affirmed that “all democrats must join forces to combat the plague of 21st century socialism.”
In Lima and several Peruvian cities, a march of Venezuelans has been called in response to Machado’s call.
At the head of a demonstration in Caracas, Machado said on Saturday that “the greatest civic feat in the history” of the country was carried out by the anti-Chavez movement through the standard-bearer of the Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD), Edmundo González Urrutia, who – he said – “swept” the presidential elections, despite the fact that the official result gives victory to President Nicolás Maduro.
“They thought that by persecuting our witnesses we were not going to get our records, but within 24 hours we had the records digitalized,” Machado said during the demonstration, where thousands of people gathered in defense of the victory of González Urrutia, who – the anti-Chavez supporters insist – won the presidential election.
The opposition claims that it collected, through witnesses and members of the voting table, “83.5%” of the minutes, which it later uploaded to a website, where any citizen can check the result with their ID number.
On Friday, 22 countries and the European Union (EU) called on Venezuelan authorities to end the “violence” and also to release “all those who have been detained, including representatives of the opposition.”
This call was joined by that of the Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS), which approved by consensus a resolution in which it advocates respecting “human rights and fundamental freedoms” in Venezuela.
