Kehagia: “Fortunate” that Mr. Androulakis responded to Kasselakis’ invitation – 2024-07-26 12:00:53

The press representative of SYRIZA-PS, Voula Kehagia, mentioned the visit of Stefanos Kasselakis and a delegation of the party to Cyprus on the occasion of the completion of 50 years since the illegal Turkish invasion and occupation, during the briefing of the political editors.

Among the contacts of the SYRIZA president that he mentioned was the meeting with the families of missing persons and the Pancypriot Organization of Undeclared Prisoners and Missing Persons, to whose members he “promised that he would do everything in his power in Greece and Europe to may the souls of themselves and the missing be relieved” and “assured that initiatives will be taken in the European Parliament on this moral issue”.

“In this context, Stefanos Kasselakis yesterday addressed the president of PASOK, Nikos Androulakis, and after congratulating him on his excellent initiative to meet Harita Mantoles in Cyprus, he invited him to raise the issue of the missing persons with the Eurosocialists on behalf of PASOK. And together Euro-left and Euro-socialists to ask Europe to take a clear position on the missing persons. The president of PASOK responded to the post of the president of SYRIZA”, said V. Kehagia.

He also highlighted SYRIZA’s commitment to the Cypriot people that it will continue to support efforts for a just and sustainable solution for the Cyprus issue within the framework of the decisions of the UN Security Council and restarting from the point where the talks were interrupted in Crans-Montana in 2017, with the aim of “a bizonal bicommunal federation solution without guarantees and occupation troops”.

V. Kehagia also emphasized that “SYRIZA-PS unequivocally condemns the Turkish hate fiestas in the occupied territories of Cyprus as well as the unacceptable statements of the Turkish President Erdogan, calling on the government to react at the diplomatic level in order for the new challenges to have an impact on Euro-Turkish relations ». “In the face of Turkish provocation, the government must firmly claim that any improvement in Greek-Turkish relations should be accompanied by an effort for Turkey’s compliance for a fair and sustainable solution to the Cyprus problem. Instead, we saw the prime minister from Cyprus responding lukewarmly to Mr. Erdoğan, essentially avoiding commenting on his provocations and words. Yesterday’s intervention by the government representative, who awkwardly repeated the words of Mr. Mitsotakis, giving the impression that he is more interested in managing discussions within the government, was equally lukewarm. SYRIZA-PS, however, claims to see the government’s reactions at the diplomatic level and the absolute condemnation of Erdogan’s challenges”, underlined the representative of SYRIZA-PS.

SYRIZA had to “defend its policies”
Asked if SYRIZA’s response to the departure of Yiannis Dragasakis was unduly harsh, she replied that she “made an absolutely destructive criticism” and SYRIZA should have “defended its policies”.

Regarding whether it is part of an effort to cooperate with PASOK, the invitation addressed by Stefanos Kasselakis to Nikos Androulakis to raise the issue of the missing with the Eurosocialists, V. Kehagia noted that it was indeed done in the context already described by St. Kasselakis for the cooperation of the progressive forces at the parliamentary level and respectively for the taking of joint initiatives between the Euro-left and Euro-socialists. He characterized it as “lucky” that N. Androulakis responded to this invitation.

Also, following the participation of both presidents in joint events in Cyprus, he conveyed that St. Kasselakis wanted to show that when there is “common ground”, we should not “let the opportunities pass”.

Regarding the developments with the party media, V. Kehagia stated that by the end of the month, the administrations and workers should present their proposals for a “sustainable solution” based on the decision of the PG that they will now absorb the 45% of the government grant. As he said, they “know better” and “it is possible to find a sustainable solution”.

Finally, regarding the finances of the party and how the relations of St. Kasselakis with Alexis Tsipras, V. Kehagia replied that with the decision on the finances of the PG party, “no shadow is left” either for the leadership of the previous years or for the current one, while she noted that in his last report, the St. Kasselakis described their relations as “political”.
