Keanu Reeves: The Actor and His Passion for Motorcycles, A Look Into His Love for Two-Wheeled Vehicles and the Risks It Poses

Almost parallel to the beginning of his career as an actor, Keanu Reeves developed an intense passion for motorized two-wheeled vehicles and although at some point this put his life in danger, it will continue to be one of his great loves.

If there is an actor as loved as he is admired in the industry, it is undoubtedly Keanu Reeves, who has given us the interpretations of Neo in The Matrix, John Wick and has even been the voice of Johnny Silverhand in the video game that inspired the Cyberpunk series. And coupled with his performance, listening to Reeves talk about his passion for motorcycles is just as captivating.

Almost four decades ago, the Bill and Ted Saving the Universe actor rode a motorcycle for the first time, according to what he himself told GQ magazine, and since then this has become one of the great impulses of his life:

I learned to ride a motorcycle while filming a movie in Munich. There was a young woman who had an Enduro and I asked her if she would teach me how to ride it. And when I returned to Los Angeles, in ’86 or ’87, I bought my first motorcycle.

He has cultivated so much appreciation for both currents that, almost like a dream, he managed to combine them in his professional activity, founding in 2011 a company dedicated to the creation of these completely personalized vehicles!

Together with Gard Hollinger, the interpreter of Matrix: Resurrections, he founded Arch Motorcycle, an industry committed to creating handmade, personalized and completely custom-made motorcycles, which would be a dream for any biker (although you can imagine the final price of the check). The founding of this company has allowed Reeves to become the custodian of a garage full of impressive models that add to his own collection that he procures as true relics.

The source of love and the risk to your health

During the interview for GQ Magazine, Reeves opened the doors to his garage while expressing his unconditional love for these vehicles:

It is its visceral quality, the vibration, the wind, the sound. It’s really a great place to think, feel, escape. When I don’t ride a motorcycle, I have withdrawal. It’s not good for my health

And indeed, beyond the withdrawal syndrome that haunts the Team to Force actor when he is away from his beloved means of transportation, the fact of loving speed so much has already caused him a couple of serious problems in the past. At the age of 24, Keanu Reeves suffered an accident in California and, what he himself called “a devil’s ride”, left him hospitalized for days with several broken ribs and other injuries.

Back then, his spleen had to be removed due to the accident and in its place Reeves got a large scar that extends across his abdomen. Even so, currently the intrepid actor maintains that his obsession with motorcycles is such that at some point he broke the rules of his contracts. “In the past there were contracts that said I couldn’t ride a motorcycle, you’re an asset and they don’t want you to crash. So sometimes I paid attention to that and other times I didn’t… Oops,” he admitted with amusement to the magazine.

In his large collection, both of motorcycles and memorabilia, Keanu Reeves keeps the second motorcycle he bought, a 1973 Mark 2A Norton Commando. In fact, for the filming of My Private Idaho in 1991, the actor appeared on screen with his esteemed vehicle. since his character had to drive exactly the same model.

He also fondly remembers that, in films such as Chain Reaction, John Wick 3: Parabellum and even in The Matrix Reloaded -indirectly-, he was able to enjoy his two passions in the same fusion. Did you know this fact about the Canadian actor? And beyond that, do you share his love for either acting or motor vehicles?
