Professional basketball KBL has decided to revoke the membership of Goyang Day One, which suffered from financial difficulties such as overdue wages for the players.
On the morning of the 16th, KBL held the 28th 6th extraordinary general meeting and board of directors at the KBL Center in Gangnam-gu, Seoul and announced that “The Day One Club has been decided to be expelled.”
Day One, which acquired the Goyang Orion professional basketball team ahead of the 2022-2023 season, caused various financial problems such as delayed payment of KBL subscription fees, unpaid wages for players and home game operators, and non-payment of Orion acquisition payments.
As a result, Day One received a final notice from the KBL board of directors at the end of May to settle various debts, including unpaid wages for players, employees, and officials, by the 15th of this month.
However, I mightn’t solve my financial problems until the 15th, so I ended up losing my KBL membership that day.
This is the first time a club has been expelled from professional basketball, which was launched in 1997.
Article 12 of the KBL Articles of Incorporation stipulates that if it is recognized that it is incapable of running a club, the team in question can be expelled with a vote of 75% or more at the general meeting following deliberation by the board of directors.
With this decision, attention is also focused on KBL’s future actions ahead of the 2023-2024 season.
Immediately, the possibility of preparing for the 2023-2024 season with a 9-team system, or a scenario in which KBL and other 9 clubs will try to maintain the 10-club system, etc. are raised.
Professional basketball had an 8-team system in the 1997 season, the first year, and expanded to 10 teams from the 1997-1998 season.
