Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev arrived in the former capital, Almaty on Wednesday and instructed authorities to renovate the country’s largest metropolis and improve its condition. It is the city that has suffered the most from the recent protests.
During a meeting with the authorities at the operational headquarters, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said he came to personally assess the extent of the “terrorist attack” once morest the city, according to a statement released by the Kazakh presidency.
Kassym-Jomart Tokayev instructed the government commission, as well as the municipality of Almaty, to promptly restore the infrastructure, including the buildings of state bodies, law enforcement agencies and special structures, as well as as video surveillance systems.
“You know, Almaty is my hometown. This is where I was born and studied,” he said. “We are now faced with the task of rebuilding this city as soon as possible. The Kazakh president stressed that the gradual withdrawal of peace forces from members of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) led by Russia will begin on Thursday.
“The organized withdrawal of the CSTO peacekeeping contingent begins tomorrow,” he said.
CSTO forces are made up of military units from Russia, Belarus, Armenia, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan.
While noting that he had negotiations with the leaders of the respective states, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev thanked the contingent command for the work done during the protests.
“The very presence of the CSTO peacekeeping contingent in Kazakhstan, including in Almaty, played a very important role in stabilizing the situation in our country. – Families of security forces killed
Kassym-Jomart Tokayev also met relatives of police and military personnel killed in the “tragic events” in Almaty, the statement said.
The Kazakh president expressed his condolences and spoke with family members of the slain security forces. He promised that the state will provide them with “all forms of support.”
He presented medals to relatives of the deceased security forces. He stressed that this represents the reward for their “courage and dedication” in the exercise of their military and official functions, and for their actions aimed at protecting the interests of the state.
