Kaunas Seeks Visionary Builders to Bring the MK Čiurlionis Concert Hall to Life: Aiming for National Support

Proposals are expected until October 2.

The modern city is worth it

A hall of the highest acoustic standards dedicated to classical music and adapted spaces for various cultural activities, congresses and conferences with underground parking will be built on the banks of the Nemunas, near the Vytautas Didijo (Aleksot) bridge. In April of this year, a construction permit was issued for the facility.

Contract works are purchased according to the technical project prepared by the joint team of “Paleko archstudios” and “Baltic Engineers” company of “Be Live” group of companies.

“We will open the science museum soon, the construction of bridges and swimming pools is also accelerating – we need to move on with other projects in Kaunas. Art connoisseurs and representatives of serious music used to say that Kaunas lacks classical concert halls – the kind that big European cities have. Modern Kaunas is definitely worth it.

We hope to have a contractor this fall, and the start of work will depend on funding. We are ready to start construction with city funds because we are not getting support from the current central government. For now, we don’t expect it, but we expect changes this fall,” says Kaunas Mayor Visvaldas Matijošaitis.

It is planned that the total cost of construction will not exceed 74.8 million. EUR with VAT. The contractor is selected based on price and quality criteria.

Construction works are scheduled for a period of two years. Proposals from potential contractors applying to build the MKČiurlionis concert center are expected until October 2.

A unique structure above the river

On a plot of more than 4 hectares in Žemaja Freda (H. and O. Minkovskių str. 31), an A++ energy efficiency class, 25 meters high, almost 23 thousand. square meter glass-enclosed building with an underground parking lot. Additional parking for transport is provided next to the building.

Two halls are planned in the building. The main hall will accommodate about one and a half thousand spectators and will be suitable for classical music concerts, operettas and natural acoustic performances of a similar genre. The second – a multifunctional space with a view of the Nemunas – will have up to 700 seats. It will be used not only for concerts, but also for conferences, exhibitions and other events.

According to the authors of the project, the MKČiurlionis concert center will harmoniously fit into the general relief of the left bank of the Nemunas and will harmonize harmoniously with the urban development that is being developed around and on the other side of the river, the landscape of the newly revived Nemunas Island.

From the outside, the transparent wavy facade will reflect the reflections of the river water, while inside the visitors will be able to see the lively landscape of the iconic old town of Kaunas and the picturesque panorama framed by the flow of the Nemunas.

Architectural solutions create the impression that the object is hovering over the water. A cozy harbor for small ships will be inserted next to the building.

The Lithuanian work won

The architectural expression of the future MKČiurlionis concert center became clear in 2017, when Kaunas organized an international competition for an architectural idea.

As many as 119 teams of architects from 36 countries submitted their proposals. The evaluation took place ensuring maximum anonymity of participants from all over the world. In the end, it turned out that Lithuanians won the competition – “Paleko archstudija” based in Vilnius.

Laureate of the Lithuanian National Culture and Art Prize arch. The team of architects led by Roland Palek also undertook further work in the preparation of the technical project. Here, a tandem of general designers has been formed with the company “Baltic Engineers” of the “Be Live” group of companies, combining the creative forces of architects and the competences of experienced engineers, hydrologists and hydrotechnicians, acoustics experts.

At the end of 2022, as Kaunas ends the year of the European Capital of Culture, the authors presented project proposals to the public, which received a lot of interest and support.

Multifaceted benefits for the people of Kaunas

Next to the future MKČiurlionis concert center, more important works for the city are planned.

The reconstruction of H. and O. Minkovskii Street will begin soon.

Right here, on both sides of the Nemunas River, a bridge for pedestrians and cyclists is being built. According to the director of the administration of the Kaunas Municipality, Tad Metelionis, Nemunas Island and the territories adjacent to it are being developed in a complex manner.

“The new bridge will have many functions. It will provide uninterrupted pedestrian and cycling connections between Lower Freda, the island and the city centre. After the construction of the MKČiurlionis concert center, a convenient parking lot will be installed nearby. During the day, it will serve residents coming from Aleksot, Garliava side. If you leave your car here, you will have the opportunity to save time by safely traveling to the center on foot or by bicycle over the bridge – to study, work, and spend your free time,” says T. Metelionis.

On Nemunas Island, the installation of the exhibition of the Science and Innovation Center “Mokslo Sala” is nearing completion – the opening is planned for the end of autumn.
