The young Tahitian Kauli Vaast is taking part in the World Surfing Games for the first time under the colors of France. At 21, he has a first yield to win a place for the Olympic Games which will be held in a little over a year on his home spot of Teahupo’o.

Tell us already how you feel regarding your first selection for the France team…
I am very happy and very proud to be in the France team. It’s my first time. It was complicated for the selections. I’m happy to be surrounded by people I know well. Like Hira (Teriinatoofa), Vahiné (Fierro), Jérémy (Florès), and the other people from the France team that I all know very well.

This competition is an opportunity to get your ticket for the Olympics, which have never been so close. How do you feel ?
I’m just very happy as I said. I didn’t even think I might be in the France team as the level is high. It was tough for me on the first two Challengers in Australia. But I think I proved a few things with my final in Teahupo’o last year and my victory in QS Morocco earlier this year. This competition is very important for the place at the Olympics. I am concentrated. I don’t lose the desire, I’m hungry! I know what my goals are. I will give everything to win this Olympic ticket.

We saw you at ease in training. You like El Salvador and its powerful waves, don’t you?
The waves suit me. I like big waves. And then I like to surf in boardshorts. It grows, it’s the Pacific. I tried a lot of boards. I surf every day since I arrived, I try all my boards. I feel good, it’s cool.
