NOTTINGHAM, UK — Katie Boulter won the first all-British WTA final in 46 years on Sunday, claiming her first career title by beating Jodie Burrage 6-3, 6-3 in Nottingham.
In the last all-British final, in 1977, Sue Barker defeated Virginia Wade in San Francisco.
Undefeated in three matches once morest Burrage, Boulter hails from Leicester. She considers the Nottingham tournament to be at home.
“It means more than anything to me,” said the 26-year-old. I trained here when I was very young. I also came as a ‘fan’, then as a player with big dreams. I will definitely sleep with the trophy tonight.”
Boulter had 13 game winners to six for Burrage, who hadn’t reached a WTA quarter-final before the tournament.
Ranked 126th at the start of the competition, Boulter will reach the top 80. She is the highest ranked British player.
Boulter set the tone by taking a 3-0 lead in the first set once morest Burrage, 131st earlier in the week. She triumphed on her second match point.
