Venezuelan weightlifter Katherin Echandía will make her debut on August 7 at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, where she will try to win a gold medal for a delegation that until Wednesday had not been able to win medals in other disciplines.

The Carabobo native will be one of the competitors in the -49 kilogram (kg) category of the female branch and will try to excel in the snatch and clean and jerk modalities.

The weightlifting competition, which has enjoyed great popularity in each edition of the great world event, will be held at the Paris South Arena.

The athlete’s scrolls

Echandía, who will turn 23 on August 14, arrives with the benefit of having won a gold medal at the Youth Olympic Games. She also ranked eighth in the latest official ranking of the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) before the competition in France, which will bring together women in the adult category.

The Creole, who has been in Paris for several days, believes she is fully prepared to compete in the competition, although she does not let her nerves get the better of her.

“I’m taking it very calmly. I’m very proud to have fulfilled this dream (participating in Paris 2024). We prepared ourselves very well, with the confidence that the best results will come out,” she said in an interview with Aloys Marín, a journalist from the Venezuelan Olympic Committee (COV).

Important maturity

For Echandía, who obtained her ticket to Paris 2024 after finishing sixth in the World Cup held in Phuket, Thailand, she thinks she is at the peak of her sporting maturity to face the competition that will bring together the strongest women in the world.

“I’m not satisfied with just anything and I want to excel. I’m more mature because I’ve gone through many processes that helped me become the athlete I am today. I know that goals are not achieved easily, that you have to fight hand in hand with God,” said the Valencian, who assured that she will do her best to win an award for Venezuela, which is why she will stick to the strategic plan of her coaches.

“There is a varied strategy. Many of us will start with the same weight (in the different attempts), but there can be any change. It depends on the coaches’ planning. We are going to go with everything to be able to do what they have in mind,” added the lady who obtained a silver circle at the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games and before in 2022 was consecrated at the Asunción 2022 South American Games.
