The President of the Republic, Katerina Sakellaropoulou, attended the High Priestly Memorial for those who fell during the coup and the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974, at the Athens Cathedral on Saturday morning (20.7.24), while followingwards she laid a wreath at the Monument Unknown Soldier.
In her statement, Katerina Sakellaropoulou emphasized that “fifty years have passed today since the barbaric invasion of the Turkish troops in Cyprus, a period of time during which the occupation of more than a third of its territory continues, in violation of any concept of international legality”.
“We do not forget the heroes, Cypriots and Greeks, who resisted the invader with unparalleled bravery and sacrificed their lives fighting a superior enemy.”
“We continue to sympathize with the families of the missing, until the fate of all of them is ascertained,” he pointed out.
The final vindication of the sacred Cypriot struggle, by finding a just and sustainable solution based on the United Nations Decisions and the European acquis, is our top pursuit and our debt to history”.
