Today, the president of SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance, Stefanos Kasselakis, made a surprise visit to the “Elena” maternity hospital, according to a party announcement, in order “to be informed about the situation at the hospital, after the serious complaints that came to light about the conditions prevailing in it”.
“From these, a sad picture emerged with workers, pregnant women and attendants searching in vain for a working cooler, buying bottled water and putting it on top of malfunctioning air conditioners to keep cold,” the statement says and continues:
“The employees of the hospital, with whom the president of SYRIZA-PS, Stefanos Kasselakis, spoke, confirmed the complaints, while they also informed him of a number of other, particular and serious, problems, such as the many-month delays observed for gynecological examinations, which are related to the appearance of cancer and reach up to one year! The situation in the old hospital building is described as tragic, where the air conditioning does not work. Also, the president of SYRIZA was informed that after the publicization of the water problem and under the burden of his visit to the hospital, the administration announced the free distribution of water from the cistern” says the official opposition in its announcement and notes:
“SYRIZA-PS dealt with due seriousness from the first moment the shocking complaint of the workers at “Elena” about the lack of drinking water in the country’s largest maternity hospital, stressing that it highlights the situation in the public health system under the Mitsotakis administration and the Adonis ministry Georgiadis, considering that the resignation of the latter would be a minimal move of political decency”. He adds that “at the same time, SYRIZA pointed out that the purpose of the government and the political leadership of the Ministry of Health is to push citizens into the paid arms of private hospitals and maternity hospitals” commenting: “It is typical, moreover, the arbitrary and insidious statement of Mr. Georgiadis that “the public health system is not only the state system, it is also the private one”.
“It is another visit to a public hospital, to the “flagship” of our country’s maternity hospitals. Here where, literally, there was no drinking water for days, where the waiting list for gynecological surgeries has reached a year, where the staff is experiencing real disrespect even though they are making enormous efforts with honor”, he underlined in his statement after the visit to the hospital, Stefanos Kasselakis.
“It is another visit in which we see that the public health system has been dismantled by choice, obviously, politics. Let the minister come here, to this historic hospital, to see the problems up close. Finally, the public health system must be staffed and these people, the staff, who live in a hostage situation and cannot have rudimentary family or professional planning must be made permanent”, he stressed, speaking of “real labor exploitation of public officials who they keep our families alive in general and who here bring joy to families with childbirth, but that too in conditions that are not appropriate for a developed country in Europe”.
“Obviously there is support from the official opposition for all the staff and above all for health, which is a right of the Greek citizen”, concluded St. Kasselakis.
