Kashmir village ‘Arah Gam’ is on the way to become a book village

Indian administered Kashmir ‘Arahgam’, a village of 400 houses situated on the banks of Kevillar Lake, is on its way to becoming a book village (village of books).

It was taken up by a young Sirajuddin Khan to make it a book village, which was later adopted by a social organization, Sarhad Foundation and the government.

Shahida Khanum told Independent Urdu: ‘One of our youths, Siraj, along with the district administration of Bandipora, made Aragam a book village. They built a library in every house, where children could study. Each subject book will be available separately in each house. Like there are English literature books in my home library.’

According to Shahida: ‘Siraj spoke to all the elders that I want to build a book village, if you guys cooperate, the villagers cooperated and gave a room in their respective houses.’

Mohammad Amir, Sub-Divisional Magistrate of Aragam, a village in Bandipora district, says that there is no better place than Aragam in Kashmir to build a book village. The unique natural beauty here is such that it will impress the mind of the reader. There is so much serenity here that the reader will be immersed in Kashmiri history, literature and culture.’

He further informed that ‘Government, Sarhad Foundation and residents estimate that a library will be built in all 400 houses of the village, making it the largest book village in the world.’
