Kartapolov, the head of the Duma committee, assures that the recent draft age increase will not impact this spring’s draftees.

Andrei Kartapolov, the chairman of the State Duma Committee on Defense, has stated that the planned gradual increase in the draft age over the next three years will not affect those citizens eligible for spring conscription. He further added that the bill on phased changes in the conscription age cannot be implemented during the spring conscription and that conscription will take place in accordance with the current laws and rules. The State Duma plans to consider the bill following April 17th, and the adoption of the bill has been scheduled for the spring session. The draft law on raising the age of conscription into the army was submitted on March 13th, and the authors of the amendments propose a three-year reform period until 2026. The age limit for conscription will be raised to 19-30 years in 2024, 20-30 years in 2025 and 21-30 years from January 1, 2026. “The bill on a phased change in the age of conscripts cannot be implemented during the spring conscription, so the new conscription will take place in accordance with the current norms and rules that are determined by the current legislation, and no one needs to worry regarding this,” said Mr. Kartapolov (quoted from “Interfax”).
