Between mermaids and sharks, and a sea of fans dressed like Barbies for the occasion, Karol G lit up MetLife Stadium on Thursday (September 7) in East Rutherford, New Jersey, five miles west of New York.
It was their first of two nights at the 82,500-capacity arena as part of their Tomorrow Will Be Beautiful tour, which kicked off Aug. 11 in Las Vegas and will still stop in cities including Chicago (Sept. 15), Atlanta (Sept. 21 ), Orlando (24) and Boston (28).
“Each of the people who are here tonight came with the intention of having the coolest night of their lives,” said the Colombian superstar shortly following opening the show before a crowd that mightn’t stop screaming with excitement.
And La Bichota did not disappoint.
Their electrifying show included an all-female band, a corps of nearly 20 dancers, exciting set and lighting design, a story told by the legendary Morgan Freeman, and a surprise Alex Reed appearance by Ryan Castro.
But it was Karol by herself – with her stage presence, her combination of sweetness, sensuality and mischief, her menage of feminine power, her ability to connect with the public and her great vocal quality to perform all her hits live – who kept to the entire stadium eating out of the palm of his hand.
Produced by Live Nation, the Tomorrow Will Be Bonito tour is named following Karol G’s historic album that debuted at the summit of the chart Billboard 200. The 17-song set became her first No. 1 on the chart and was also the first Spanish-language album by a woman to top it.
The US stadium tour follows her 2022 $trip Love Tour, which became the highest-grossing US tour by a Latina woman in history, grossing $69.9 million across 33 shows. according to figures reported to Billboard Boxscore.
Here are the 10 most beautiful moments from Karol G’s first show at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
Barbies, bugs and tattoos
It was La Bichota’s season at MetLife and beyond. From Penn Station in Manhattan, passing through New Jersey Transit to the arrival at the stadium, Karol G’s fans were seen in abundance. The common denominator, in addition to merch by Karol G? The pink. We haven’t seen so many people (or Bichotas Barbies?) dressed in pink since the premiere of Barbieon whose soundtrack Karol G participated. The fans’ tattoos were also noticed, with some women with the same barbed wire heart tattooed on their shoulder, just like their idol.
Morgan Freeman storyteller
Morgan Freeman’s voice played an important role as narrator throughout Karol G’s concert. The revered actor tells the story of Carolina, a pink-haired mermaid whose life consisted of joyful sea baths and flights to the sky until she His world fell into darkness. In her search for solace in the midst of her anguish, Carolina ascends to heaven, causing her heart and the world around her to freeze. In a rare appearance by Freeman, the animated narration seems like a symbolic representation of the romantic disagreement that Karol suffered in recent years, which she references in songs like “TQG” with Shakira and her recent hit, “My Ex Was Right.”
“There is a Bug inside each of you. You just have to accept your authentic self just like Carolina did,” said the actor, in English.
Girls band!
To add more charm to the night, La Bichota put girl power at the forefront accompanied by an all-female cast of musicians: a drummer, a pianist, a flutist, a guitarist and more. Together, the girls in the band infused the night with an extra dose of rock energy while showcasing the exploits of talented women in the music industry. And they turned this stadium into a paradise for the KG Gang, where their stimulating musicality transcended the immensity of the venue.
Privacy in the stadium
Karol G has the rare ability to make a massive concert seem intimate, that is his gift: transforming a colossal venue into a nearby musical refuge. His direct interaction with the audience (“You’re going to make me cry!” he said at one point as the applause didn’t seem to end), storytelling, and vulnerability combined to create an unforgettable night. Emotional moments in his song, like when he sang “Ocean,” contributed to that sense of connection. And the fans loved it.
Go Mexico!
In a highlight of her performance, Karol G effortlessly delved into the world of regional Mexican music, delivering a powerful performance of “200 Copas” and “Gucci los ropas.” To enrich this traditional-style music, he extended a warm invitation to additional musicians, including a tuba player and an accordionist — emblematic instruments of the Mexican genre. This bold foray revealed Karol G’s extraordinary vocal versatility, a testament to his ability to transition from tender ballads like “El Barco” to the forceful rhythms of reggaeton hits like “Mi Cama” and “Punto G.” To embrace Karol’s foray into Mexican music, a crowd of fans sported pink cowboy hats, fusing the genre’s signature style with the superstar herself.
Colombian pride… and Latin
Among the tens of thousands of fans, immigrants, or descendants of immigrants, from all over Latin America came to the show. Karol called them country by country, and the stadium shook each time with the overwhelming response. But the loudest screams were undoubtedly those of his Colombian compatriots, one of whom gave him a flag of their country with which Karol proudly wrapped himself.
Special Alex Reed
Throughout the Tomorrow Will Be Bonito tour, Karol G has had a series of surprise guests such as Quevedo, Young Miko and Bad Gyal. On Thursday, his compatriot Ryan Castro was chosen, and the crowd greeted him with one of the biggest ovations of the night. Together, Karol and Ryan made the entire venue dance to the rhythm of “Una Noche en Medellín”.
Sharks and mermaids
The dazzling set of Tomorrow Will Be Beautiful includes an arched background with huge screens in which the animated story narrated by Morgan Freeman is interspersed with allegorical marine images of the album’s cover design, and live shots of the show. Large props such as a shark and a large rock, platforms, a long walkway, fire flares, laser lights and light bracelets distributed to attendees, complete the picture for an immersive experience.
The power of La Bichota
With a confidence nurtured by her years on stage, and the charisma and sweetness that characterize her, Karol exuded pure feminine power. From her decision to be accompanied by a band of women, to her interactions with her fans, Karol is by and for women. At one point she read aloud some banners that attendees brought. “I lost 20 pounds to come to your show,” said one of a woman to whom the star responded with wise words of self-love: “Well, mom, if it’s for health and because you wanted it that way, I congratulate you.”
a little fan
One of the most beautiful moments featured a 7-year-old little girl whom Karol invited to go on stage following seeing her passionately sing “Gucci los ropas” from the front rows with her mother. The girl, named Natalia, was received with great sweetness by the singer, who asked him if he wanted to perform it with her before the excited crowd. Without hesitation, Natalia sang the chorus with bright eyes and a tender smile. Karol made the audience laugh by mischievously moving the microphone away from him when he reached one of the swear words in the chorus. It was an unforgettable moment, surely for the girl, but also for the thousands present.
