60 participants in cyber attack scenario – Interior Minister highlights cybersecurity and cybercrime as important priorities for the Interior Department
Vienna (OTS) – The annual KSÖ simulation game with around 60 players from the areas of energy supply, telecommunications, mobility, financial services, healthcare as well as industry, authorities and emergency services took place on November 13th and 14th, 2023 in Vienna. The aim of the simulation game was to confront the participants with a cyber attack scenario in order to evaluate the measures defined in the players’ organizations. “Today’s simulation game is primarily intended for networking, but also to be prepared together for an emergency,” said Gerhard Karner. Particular attention was paid to coordination and cooperation between the individual organizations.
Interior Minister Gerhard Karner said: “I am grateful to the KSÖ that this simulation game was organized with AIT and the House of Digitalization – a long-standing format of the KSÖ to complete ‘dry training’ on topics such as cybersecurity and cybercrime.” These topics in particular are beside the point The fight once morest smuggling and illegal migration is the main focus in the interior department, added Karner.
The Interior Minister emphasized: “The Interior Ministry has taken numerous initiatives in the area of cybercrime in recent months. As part of the criminal service reform, cyber specialists will be closer to the people in the regions, but the Cyber Cobra in the Federal Criminal Police Office will also be strengthened in terms of personnel.” Cybercrime rose by 30 percent last year, it is the fastest growing type of crime in the reporting statistics. They are preparing for this with the criminal service reform, but also with more than 700 jobs in 38 regions in Austria. “Thanks to the cooperation with the cyber trading academies in Horn and Tamsweg, we have succeeded in getting young people interested in cybersecurity and setting accents in training,” said Karner.
You have to prepare yourself and network to prevent hacker attacks, said the Interior Minister. “That’s why the NIS2 directive is currently being implemented.” Karner emphasized an implementation that will be implemented with the economy, with those affected, but especially with the KSÖ. “In addition, networking and communication are important, and what helps here better than today’s dry training – to protect the Austrian population and our companies and institutions.”
