Supermodel-turned-entrepreneur Karlie Kloss is building an empire. She has just bought the lifestyle magazine iD from Vice Media via the new company Bedford Media of which she is president.
The British magazine, specializing in fashion and youth culture, will remain under the leadership of its editor-in-chief Alastair McKimm who will also become the publication manager and global artistic director. According to an internal memo obtained by The Hollywood Reporter, Karlie Kloss herself will serve as director.
The same document states that she has “a vision for the future of i-D and the industry as a whole.” This isn’t the first time Karlie Kloss has ventured into the media industry. It had already acquired W Magazine through a group of investors.
iD was founded in 1980 by designer and former Vogue artistic director Terry Jones. In its early days, the magazine adopted a very basic format and documented the punk/post-punk era in the UK. In the meantime, it has evolved significantly and is now one of the reference publications for youth culture.
Karlie Kloss still works as a model (she is notably the face of Carolina Herrera’s Good Girl perfumes) but has largely developed other activities in parallel. She founded the Kode with Klossy project, which offers young girls the opportunity to learn to code for free, and created her own virtual fashion universe on Roblox, called Klosette. It also invests in digital start-ups linked to the fashion sector.
