Yes, it’s true.
I like Karlach: she has the energy of a golden retriever, even if she is able to tear up until the job is done. However, I am impressed that his face was not touched. His body is made of muscle and scar tissue, but his face? Immaculate, intact. If you’ve ever wanted her to be more battered by combat, the modding community has you covered.
Karlach benefited from a makeover during the first years of its access. His model being developed was much smaller and much less beefy. No wonder, because everything that was done at the time was a big work in progress. Before she hit the gym and was hitched to the fires of Avernus, players managed to get a glimpse of her, according to mod creator labotor:
“A certain version of Karlach was released (in early access) that included a new, more muscular and scarred body type, and matching face,” labotor wrote. “The body ended up being introduced in Patch 7…but Larian, to some people’s surprise, opted for a different, much softer face.
Some enjoyed it, but many (myself included) were disappointed – nothing in the new face says ‘battle-hardened warrior who was trapped shredding demons in the Underworld’…hence this mod”.
The mod also features a few more customizations for everyone’s favorite hellish war machine, including eyes with black scleras, hellish irises, and a dreadlock hairstyle that didn’t exist until now. I must confess that I am a big fan of this mod. While I understand why they went with the new design, which lets Karlach’s excited tiefling side shine through, I’m a little sad regarding what might have been.
After all, this is someone who spent his time bashing imp skulls in the underworld, and his body tells the tale of that journey. Larian didn’t skimp on the means either, she is truly torn. The fact that everything stops at his neck – except for his chipped horn? That my paladin’s demonic wife looks battle-hardened, anyone with taste knows scars are a hallmark anyway.
