“Dominica – The natural island in the Caribbean” at 8.15 p.m. on ORF 2
Vienna (OTS) – Karl Ploberger explores a very special natural paradise in “Das Paradies in der Ferne” on Tuesday, June 6, 2023 at 8:15 p.m. on ORF 2! “Dominica – The natural island in the Caribbean”:
an insider tip among the islands in this region. The country is of volcanic origin, lush green with mist-shrouded mountains and tropical flora. Surrounded by sun, beach and sea, the people here live the Caribbean joie de vivre. Hidden in this breathtaking landscape, Karl Ploberger discovers many tropical garden paradises.
Artistic tropical garden with sea views: High on the cliffs is the estate of Michelle Murphy, an artist from Philadelphia, USA. A tropical blooming oasis – sea view included. Many botanical peculiarities grow here, such as the parrot’s beak, a gourd tree or the ylang-ylang tree, whose fragrant flowers are the basis of the perfume “Chanel No. 5”.
Roseau Botanical Garden: The botanical garden in the island’s capital, Roseau, has a long history. It was created in 1890 during British colonial times. Today, the 40-hectare landscaped park also serves as a recreation area. A school bus crushed by a tall tree during Hurricane David in 1979 reminds visitors of the extremes of weather that are omnipresent in Dominica.
Free Up Farm: At the foot of the dormant Morne Diablotins volcano in the north of the island is Free Up Farm – a seven hectare paradise with exotic fruits, vegetables and many herbs. This organic farm is the life project of Lubitza “Lulu” Currie and Aubrey Bynoe. Cultivation is an enormous challenge here on Dominica due to the unpredictable weather. Lulu and Aubrey have specialized in climate-resilient crops and suitable cultivation systems.
Zion Valley Herb Garden: In the valley below the spectacular Victoria Falls, tucked away in the rainforest is the Zion Valley Herb Garden. Its owner is well known in Dominica: Moses Joseph James. His family has been testing the effects of various medicinal herbs for many generations.
Tropical Papillote Garden: At the proud age of 93, Anne Baptiste is a gardening legend in Dominica. She has created a Caribbean oasis here with a great passion for gardening. Two waterfalls splash down the green slopes in the two-hectare garden, with hot volcanic springs and botanical treasures in between.
Indian River: A special highlight on Karl Ploberger’s journey is the Indian River tour through the densely overgrown jungle landscape. The river is known far beyond the country’s borders. Scenes from the cinema blockbuster “Pirates of the Caribbean 2” with Hollywood stars Keira Knightley, Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom were filmed here.
