Karl-Heinz Rummenigge wanted world star as assistant coach

Former CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge wanted to sign Xabi Alonso as assistant coach at Bayern Munich. Uli Hoeneß and Rummenigge considered strengthening the coaching staff with the Spaniard.

“We once tried to bring him to Bayern Munich as an assistant coach. Under Niko Kovac, I think,” said Rummenigge Bild. In the end without success.

Nevertheless, Rummenigge emphasized, as has often been the case in the past, that he appreciates Alonso extremely and believes he is capable of a great career. “If someone had such a coach as Xabi, in Liverpool, at Real, at Bayern Munich, in the national team – and had incredible success everywhere, and is a good guy, is so disciplined and empathetic – it would have to be the devil, if he doesn’t succeed as a coach.”

Alonso is currently taking the next coaching steps at Bayer Leverkusen. On Sunday, Bayern meet their former string puller in midfield. Before the international break, Bayer welcome Bayern (at 5:30 p.m. in LIVETICKER).

Is Alonso already thinking regarding a possible future at Bayern-Bank? “No, that’s not an issue for me. I don’t look any further than Sunday,” said the 41-year-old at the press conference before the game.
