Three years following the first EP Hail Gold (and two following the standalone single Dry Heave) remain Karat’s Gold with Solid Gold the short format (in addition to cool Sci-Di artwork in the best Oozing Wound-Manier) remove.
As before, the band from Illinois also maintains a not completely satisfying snack character, which this time following almost 10 minutes leaves the impression that the compelling momentum of Chris Whitacre (vox/guitar), Ian Sheridan (drums) and Alex Poole (bass) only to be served teased – but the teased potential is still convincing this time.
Where the trio themselves The Jesus Lizard, Paper Mice and, well, David Cronenberg gives as references, the wide-legged nonchalance of Southern guitar playing is more often reminiscent of a noise-rock version of Every Time I Die im Hardcore-Clinch mit Mastodon think when the gruff repetition of the stoic riffs is regarding to come in JCR peels the sweat from the body, Ministry of Love straight rocking and math-affine attacking at the same time and The Helstrom Theory a larger panorama sketched there.
Just the middle part of Solid Gold however, shows up more prominently when the snappy groove of the snappy Disown You immediately goes into the neck and the hips, Klaatu lets the strings stroll in front of the formative, gurgling bass more progressively, snarling and Dorian Gray Somersaults on the highways, underlining the band’s attitude, which is both calm and high-spirited, exemplarily – mind off and off!
The accusation that Solid Gold not the next step that was hoped for Karat’s Gold is opposed by an effectiveness, dynamism and amusement that does not waste a second, which (rounding up the rating with a closed eye) still collects advance praise in order to keep the group promising on the radar.
