Islamabad: Karachi zoo is on the verge of closure as the economic crisis continues to worsen in Pakistan. The zoo is now unable to properly care for and feed the wild animals. A 17-year-old elephant named Noor Jahan here became paralyzed without adequate care or treatment.
Born in Tanzania, Noor Jahan was brought to Pakistan in 2009 along with three other African elephants. Noor Jahan, who cannot even stand upright now, may be euthanized. Climate Change Minister Sherry Rehman had asked the Sindh provincial government to close the zoo amid protests from various parts of the country.
Zoo officials say the animals will be shifted to safer places. But the local media reports that the process has not started yet. Meanwhile, pictures of animals living in miserable conditions in zoos have gone viral on social media. Images of malnourished lion cubs and emaciated elephants have emerged. Established in 1878, Karachi Zoo is the largest zoo in Pakistan.
