Karachi Mayor’s Bid for Reelection Teeters on the Brink

Murtaza Wahab’s difficulties in connection with the by-elections could not be reduced, the nomination papers of Mayor Karachi Murtaza Wahab from Kemari district were challenged by Jamaat-e-Islami and Tehreek-e-Insaaf in the court of City Court Election Tribunal Gharbi.

Jamaat-e-Islami candidate for Chairman UC-3 Maripur Muhammad Hussain has taken the stand in the application filed in the Election Tribunal through Usman Farooq Advocate that Murtaza Wahab is a voter and not a resident of UC-3 Maripur.

The approval of Murtaza Wahab’s nomination papers by the Returning Officer is illegal as the Sindh Local Government Act 2013 requires the candidate to be a registered voter in the ward or council.

According to the petitioner, he informed the returning officer about his objection, but the returning officer did not take action, so the election tribunal should declare the illegal action of the returning officer null and void and the nomination papers of Murtaza Wahab should be rejected.

On the other hand, Tehreek-e-Insaf candidates Zahid Jadoon and Sajid Niazi have taken the position in the petition filed in the Election Tribunal through Faran Sardar Advocate that Murtaza Wahab is not eligible to participate in local body elections from Kemari district. As per the local government rules, the candidate must be a registered voter of the concerned council.

According to the nomination papers of Murtaza Wahab requested in the application, his address is in South district, therefore, the nomination papers for the by-election from Kemari district should be rejected.
