KARACHI: ‘First’ robotic bariatric surgery for weight loss, diabetes control

Diabetes Robotic bariatric of four patients including a woman at Karachi’s Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Center (GPMC) to control the disease by reducing the weight of the patients. Surgery done

Prof. Dr. Shahid Rasool, Executive Director of Jinnah Hospital has claimed that robotic bariatric surgery has been performed for the first time in Pakistan.

Speaking to Independent Urdu, Prof. Dr. Shahid Rasool said: ‘Bariatric is a Latin word that means weight control. Patients with diabetes Weight If too much, their diabetes becomes difficult to control.

A specific surgery is done to reduce the weight of such patients. This is called bariatric surgery. Bariatric surgery is performed in two different ways. One procedure can be done with the help of a laparoscope (a light and thin tube with a camera mounted on it) which is a common procedure nowadays.

During the last two years, two thousand patients have undergone bariatric surgeries with the help of laparoscope in Jinnah Hospital. Another method is robotically assisted surgery. Which is better and safer. Robot-assisted bariatric surgery has been performed for the first time.’

According to Prof. Dr. Shahid Rasool, during the patients’ ‘first time’ robotic surgery, not only Jinnah Hospital doctors and staff were present, but also doctors from different hospitals across the country were present. So that they can learn from here and perform robotic surgery on patients in their institutions.

He said that ‘privately, seven to eight lakhs are spent on this operation. In Jinnah Hospital, these operations are done absolutely free. In Jinnah, this operation costs Rs 1 lakh to 12 lakh which is paid by Jinnah Hospital and no money is taken from the patients.

Talking regarding the method of robotic bariatric surgery, Professor Dr. Shahid Rasool said that one method is called ‘gastric sleeve’, in which the volume of the stomach is reduced, following which if someone eats two to three loaves of bread, Their stomachs are filled with a single bread.’

According to Professor Dr. Shahid Rasool, the other method of this surgery is called ‘mini-gastric bypass’ in which the volume of the small intestine is reduced by performing bariatric surgery. Normally, the human intestine is six meters and through this surgery the size of the small intestine is reduced to four meters.

According to Professor Dr. Shahid Rasool, due to the reduction in the size of the small intestine, the patient eats less and the amount of calories and nutrients absorbed from the food is also reduced, which benefits the patient.

Does the patient experience various medical problems on a regular basis following bowel bypass surgery?

In response to this question, Professor Dr. Shahid Rasool said: ‘It is not correct to say so at all. This surgery improves the patient’s life. Some patients complain of vomiting for a few days because they are not used to eating less. But this complaint also ends in a few days.’

Professor Dr. Shahid Rasool said that some robotic bariatric surgeries have been done in India, but they are not yet performed in many countries including Africa, United Arab Emirates, Turkey, robotic bariatric surgery is done only in Egypt.
