Karachi: 11 policemen suspended for ill-treatment of protesters

Karachi Officials have said on Monday that 11 of the city The police Officers have been suspended for ‘misbehaving’ with protesters.

Earlier, some videos surfaced in which women can be seen being subjected to abuse. A woman was dragged by the hands and feet.

In the videos circulating on social media, it can be seen that journalists were also beaten and a reporter was choked by the neck.

Two demonstrations were held in Karachi on Sunday regarding blasphemy. These protests were not allowed by the authorities. Clashes also took place during the protests.

“The police officers who mishandled the situation have been suspended,” Sindh government spokesman Ali Rashid told AFP.

Karachi’s senior police officer Syed Asif Raza said that five male and five female officers, including one inspector, were suspended for ‘mistreatment of women and lack of professionalism’.

A popular organization of human rights activists and feminists organized a rally on the rise in blasphemy cases. Blasphemy is a charge that can carry the death penalty.

A religious group, which has been pushing for strict enforcement of blasphemy laws, attempted a counter rally at the same venue (outside the Karachi Press Club).

Police said that 57 members of Tehreek-e-Labaik Pakistan (TLP) were arrested.

A party worker also lost his life, a government spokesperson said.

Asif Raza said that ‘Both parties broke the law. They broke barriers and demonstrated.’

He added that these organizations had been asked to postpone the rallies until after the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) meeting that began in Islamabad on Tuesday.

“Everyone has the right to demonstrate, but they expressed concern about the security situation after a deadly attack on a convoy of Chinese nationals earlier this month.”
