Mumbai: Shiv Sena (UBT) leader and Rajya Sabha member Sanjay Rawat has alleged that Kapil Dev, the World Cup-winning captain of the Indian cricket team, was not invited to the final match of the Cricket World Cup held in Ahmedabad.
Sanjay Raut alleged that Kapil Dev was not invited so as not to steal the shine from some politicians who had come to the stage to watch the match.
He told the media that the BJP had planned to use the success of the Indian cricket team for political gain and that plan fell through as India lost to Australia.
Kapil Dev was the captain of the Indian team when India won the Cricket World Cup for the first time. He is the one who instilled in us the confidence that we can win big tournaments.
Had Kapil Dev been invited, his presence would have overshadowed the aura of some politicians present at the Narendra Modi Stadium,’ Rawat said.
Kapil Dev had said that he did not come to watch the final match because no one invited him.
The officials had earlier announced that the captains of the previous years’ title-winning teams would be invited to watch the match.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah were present to watch the final match.
Rawat also said that the final matches of major tournaments were earlier held in Delhi or Mumbai, which are legendary venues for cricketers.
“The lobby of a state that has infiltrated the world of cricket changed the stadium named following Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel to the Narendra Modi Stadium.
BJP also aimed to reap the results if the Indian cricket team had won the final match.
Attempts were made to change the match between India and Australia into a match between the BJP and the Australian team. But they lost the competition,’ he said.
