The weather is downhill in the Kanto region. It will be cloudy and it will rain from around noon. It will be raining heavily over a wide area by the time I get home, and there are likely to be some places along the coast where there will be heavy rain accompanied by thunder. Please be careful of flooding on low-lying roads such as underpasses.

The maximum temperature is around 20 degrees Celsius, and there is no sunlight, so even during the day you will feel cool if you wear light clothes. It may be helpful to have water-repellent outerwear.

What is heavy rain?

Heavy rain refers to rain with an hourly rainfall of more than 30 mm and less than 50 mm. This is an image of rain falling like an overturned bucket. Also, you can get wet even with an umbrella, and regarding half of the people sleeping inside a wooden house will notice the rain. Outside, roads become like rivers, and cars driving on highways are at risk of “hydroplaning,” a phenomenon in which a film of water forms between the tires and the road surface, making the brakes ineffective.

In areas where heavy rain is expected, be careful of landslides, flooding of low-lying areas, and rising river levels.

Flooded roads are dangerous, avoid driving

Roads flooded due to heavy rain are dangerous. The water level on flooded roads cannot be determined visually. Even if you don’t think it’s a big deal, it may be at a dangerous depth.

The effects of flooding on a car vary depending on the shape and design of the car, but generally speaking, driving in water that is more than half the height of the tires will cause abnormalities in the engine and electrical system, making it impossible to drive. There is a risk that this may occur. If the tires are completely submerged in water, the vehicle will float and become difficult to move. Furthermore, if the water depth is below the door, the water pressure outside the car will make it difficult to open the door from the inside, and if the door exceeds half of its height, it will become almost impossible to open from the inside. If the water gets deeper or the current gets faster, your car may be washed away.

If you encounter heavy rain while driving, try to avoid low-lying areas as much as possible. Underpasses (underpasses that go under railways and roads) are particularly dangerous, so be sure to stay away from them. In the unlikely event that your car becomes stuck on a flooded road, it is important to get out as soon as possible.
