Kannur: West Bengal native Pushanjit Sidgar (40) has been confirmed as the accused in the Kannur train arson case, the North Region IG said. He has given a statement to the police that he set the fire out of frustration at not being allowed to beg in the train. The IG added that he did not think he had other motives.

The IG said that a 40-year-old resident of 24 South Pargas did the crime. ‘The accused set fire to the third bogie from the back of the Kannur-Alappuzha executive train using a match. One seat was set on fire, but later the entire bogie was engulfed in flames.

He was a waiter in Kolkata and later came to Kerala and was begging. The accused came to Kannur on foot from Thalassery. In the meantime, the train was set on fire in frustration of not getting money despite asking for alms,’ said the IG.

The IG said that on the basis of scientific evidence, it was confirmed that the native of Bengal had set the train on fire.

Pushanjit was living in Kannur railway station for a long time. The BPCL security personnel chased him away the other day. He set the train on fire as revenge.

Meanwhile, the Union Railway Minister intervened in the incident today and announced an NIA investigation.
