At 24 hours from the start of the celebration of the traditional Mamaya festival, which is held the day following each Tabaski festival in Kankan, the organizers are working on the final adjustments.

For the first time, there will be, beyond the festivities, an agricultural and craft fair, a series of activities to clean up the city underway in the urban commune for a few days and reading sessions from the Holy Koran and others.

The organization of this 83rd edition has aroused great enthusiasm from residents and nationals of Kankan.

The chairman of the organizing committee, Alpha Kabinet Kaba, explains the expectations. “The Mamaya is no longer a celebration for the inhabitants of Kankan, it has become a national celebration. Our goal is for it to have an international scope now. We want, through the Mamaya, to sell Guinean heritage internationally, it is a great tourist gateway for our country and it is not only Kankan that will benefit from it. We hope to have several nationalities during the next editions”.

The organizers expect to welcome nearly 4000 during the 3 days of the festivities.

Unlike previous years, this year the Mamaya celebration will be held on the unfinished site of the multicultural center, a project launched by former President Alpha Condé.

The CEO of the company Guitrakopres, Kabinet Kaba, reassures on the availability of the site which is only partially completed. “There are two aspects to the construction of this multicultural center. There is the building component and the bleachers component. Today, the bleacher which concerns the celebration of the Mamaya is finished at 98%. Since we are caught up in the weather, only the official box is covered. The project had been on hold for some time due to lack of funding because we had started the project on our own funds when we obtained the contract. But since the disbursement was not made and the authorities did not include the project in the national budget, the bank stopped financing us. She even demanded the money we owed them. That’s what killed the project. With the takeover of the project by the CNRD, some payments have already been made but there are still some to be paid”.
