Kang Sang-woo, the 31-year-old midfielder for FC Seoul, netted his inaugural goal of the season during a thrilling K-League clash against the Pohang Steelers, resulting in a 1-1 draw at the iconic Seoul World Cup Stadium on November 2, 2023. The decisive moment unfolded in the 32nd minute of the first half when Kang exhibited remarkable tenacity, expertly stealing the ball from Wandelson. With a deft maneuver, he surged past Wandelson and fired towards the goal. After goalkeeper Yoon Pyeong-guk parried his initial shot, Kang demonstrated his persistence by quickly reloading and securing the goal, much to the delight of the home crowd.
This match marked a significant milestone for Kang Sang-woo, as it was his first goal while donning the colors of FC Seoul after his transfer this season. It was particularly special for him to score against his former team, Pohang Steelers, adding a narrative of personal achievement to an already compelling match.
In his current season with Seoul, Kang Sang-woo has emerged as a pivotal figure in the team’s dynamics, boasting one goal and three assists across 33 K-League matches. His offensive capabilities are reminiscent of his standout performance during the 2020 season, where he tallied an impressive eight goals and twelve assists in just 26 league appearances. Despite his talents, FC Seoul has emphasized a more defensive strategy this season, positioning Kang as a vital left fullback, which allows him to harness his dual strengths in offensive play and defensive duties. In reflecting on his journey, Kang shared the significance of his first goal for Seoul.
Our last encounter with Pohang ended in a 1-1 draw.
This match was crucial for our aspirations in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Champions League. Although we didn’t secure a win, earning an additional point keeps our hopes alive. I’m committed to preparing thoroughly for the remaining two matches to ensure no regrets linger.
Scoring your first goal in a Seoul uniform seemed to evoke a mix of joy and restraint. Did playing against Pohang influence your reaction?
Absolutely. It had been a while since my last goal, making this moment even more significant as it marked my first score since joining Seoul. I initially wanted to celebrate, but I was filled with a sense of respect for Pohang.
Your attack seemed more dynamic than usual.
Indeed, our head coach Kim Ki-dong provided specific directives during training to expand our attacking play, particularly focusing on the right side. I collaborated closely with my teammate, Seung-mo, on the left, as we swapped roles to keep our attacks unpredictable. This tactical adjustment enhanced the overall effectiveness of our offensive strategies.
With two matches left in the season, what discussions have you had with your teammates?
Coach Kim Ki-dong shared a crucial perspective with us: “Final A isn’t solely in our hands.” He emphasized that we should take ownership of our performances, especially concerning our ACL ambitions. The upcoming game against Ulsan HD is particularly significant, as I’m aware that we have struggled against them lately. Given that it’s a home match, I’m fully committed to delivering a strong performance.
Ulsan secured their third consecutive K League 1 title. Will this ease players’ burdens as you face Ulsan, or will it add pressure?
It feels like a double-edged sword. The dynamic nature of soccer means Ulsan might play with less pressure, which can sometimes lead to improved performances. However, the key for us is to focus on our game plan. I intend to approach the match against Ulsan with the mentality that it’s our last chance this season. I firmly believe favorable outcomes will follow if we give our all without holding back.
Seoul hasn’t scored multiple goals in a match since September 14 against Daejeon Hana Citizen. The team has struggled to find the back of the net since then. What’s the mood among the players?
We don’t dwell on the topic of scoring with my teammates, as focusing on it can become burdensome. Every player, especially strikers, has a natural desire to score goals, which can add pressure. I aim to alleviate that burden by concentrating on fulfilling my responsibilities on the pitch. Even though I scored against Pohang, I prioritized our defensive efforts first. I believe that if we play our best, the chances will come. Coach Kim Ki-dong reassures us, reminding us not to rush because we possess the inherent ability to score goals.
The quality of the grass at the Seoul World Cup Stadium appears to have improved significantly.
I’ve noticed the positive changes in the grass ever since our training sessions began. The quality is remarkable, eliminating previous excuses for missed kicks. We owe it to our home fans to showcase our best performances and results. While the match against Pohang didn’t end as we hoped, it reflected much of our preparation in terms of gameplay. In the upcoming clash against Ulsan, I’m determined to secure both performance and results.
