Russian female figure skating star Kamila Valieva (18) was disciplined for using banned substances. The doping incident that emerged during the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics has been resolved following two years.

On the 29th (local time), the International Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Lausanne, Switzerland, suspended Valieva for four years, saying, “It is acknowledged that she violated the IOC (International Olympic Committee) anti-doping regulations.” The period is from December 2021, when the positive doping test occurred, to December 2025.

According to this decision, Valieva, who competed as a member of the Russian Olympic Committee in the figure skating team event and women’s single event at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, was disqualified. Following this, the International Skating Union (ISU) and the Russian Olympic Committee stripped her of the gold medal she won in the team event. The United States, which ranked second at the time, received the gold medal, and Japan, which ranked third, received the silver medal. However, only Valieva’s score was given 0 points and the other players remained the same, and the overall score of the Russian Olympic Committee team changed to a bronze medal, ahead of 4th place Canada. Yoo Young (20, scheduled to enter Kyung Hee University), who ranked 6th in women’s singles representing Korea, also rose to 5th place.

Russia said, “It is a political decision. “I will find a way to appeal,” he protested. Valieva has been noted for her outstanding skills since her junior days, including her command of the quadruple (quadruple) jump. In February 2022, she powered her way to a gold medal in the team event at the Beijing Winter Olympics. However, immediately following her win, Russian media reported that ‘Trimethazidine was detected in Valieva’s doping sample (urine collected in December 2021).’ Trimetazidine, which is used to treat angina pectoris, has been designated as a banned drug since January 2014 because it improves blood flow and can act as a stimulant. “It was because she used the same cup as her grandfather to take medication for heart disease,” Valieva said.

The IOC postponed the figure skating team event award ceremony and requested a hearing with CAS to suspend Valieva’s athlete status. CAS gave Valiyeva, who was a minor at the time, the opportunity to compete in her remaining Olympic games. Valieva took first place in the women’s singles short program, but she faltered in her free skate and she finished the competition in fourth place. Afterwards, Yuna Kim posted on social media, “Athletes who violate doping regulations cannot compete. He also posted, “There should be no exceptions to this principle.”
