Kamala Harris selects Governor Tim Walz as her vice presidential candidate

Kamala Harristhe Democratic Party candidate for the US presidency, has chosen her vice-presidential candidate on Tuesday. It is the governor of Minnesota, Tim Walz.

“I am proud to announce that I have asked Tim Walz to be my running mate,” the current US vice president wrote on her X account. “As governor, coach, teacher and veteran, he has delivered for working families like yours,” she added.

“It’s great to have him on the team. Now, let’s get to work,” he concludes.

Who is Tim Walz?

Walz, a former educator, is currently in his second term as Minnesota governor and chairs the Democratic Governors Association. He previously served 12 years in Congress, representing a conservative-leaning rural district dominated by Republicans.

The 60-year-old emerged as a “surprise contender” to partner Harris as Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro and Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly dominated the early part of the vice presidential race, The Hill reports.

The press describes Walz as a progressive policy advocate and heartland speaker who can help win support from rural and white voters. As governor, he has pushed a progressive agenda that includes free school meals, goals to address climate change, tax cuts for the middle class and expanded paid leave for state workers.

However, his critics question his handling of the Covid-19 pandemic and the 2020 Minneapolis riots that shook urban areas of the state.

Democratic Nomination

Meanwhile, Harris secured the Democratic nomination for president, becoming the first woman of color to win a major party’s nomination in the US.

The 59-year-old candidate won the support of 99 percent of the 4,567 delegates who cast their votes, the Democratic National Committee announced in a statement issued Monday evening, cited by The New York Times.
