The Democratic candidate for the Presidency of the United States, Kamala Harris, promised this Friday that if she is elected next November she will maintain the asylum restrictions established by the White House and take measures to ensure that the border remains closed between ports of entry.
“And as president… I will do more to protect our border, to reduce illegal crossings. I will take more steps to keep the border closed between ports of entry,” Harris said in Douglas, Arizona, before a packed audience that applauded her at her first visit to the border as a candidate.
The vice president made the announcement from a Republican stronghold where the Democrat seeks to snatch votes from former President Donald Trump (2017-2021) by showing proposals that already work and are “common sense.”
Specifically, Harris indicated that it will make it difficult to end the executive order established by Joe Biden’s Government last June, which has managed to reduce the number of arrests on the southwest border to average figures from 2019, when his opponent was in power.
Harris pointed the finger at Trump and the Republicans as those responsible for sinking a Senate bill negotiated for months by a bipartisan group and promoted by President Biden and which, among other measures, permanently wrote the greatest restrictions into law. to the asylum system in years, imposed by the Executive.
The vice president accused Trump of derailing the project by playing with politics, and assured that if elected she will focus her efforts on passing the project, which includes more hiring of border agents, immigration judges, and technology to fight against drug trafficking, especially fentanyl.
The Democrat attacked Trump, ensuring that the New Yorker “failed” in his leadership, returning to the Republicans the accusation that the Biden Government had failed on the border, according to the Ohio senator and Trump’s running mate. JD Vance, last August during his visit to the border.
“As your president, I will protect our nation’s sovereignty, secure our border, and work to fix our broken immigration system,” the candidate said, reiterating that she will partner with Republicans and independents to achieve this.
The Democrat’s message was clear: she wants to strengthen the border but in “a humane way,” as she said. However, he warned that those who cross the country’s borders irregularly “will be detained and expelled and will be prohibited from re-entering for five years,” in addition to “more severe criminal charges being brought against repeat offenders.”
The Democrat also highlighted her past as California attorney general and the achievements of the Biden Administration in the fight against drug trafficking, gangs and immigrant smugglers, all with the aim of securing the border.
