Kamala Harris launches WhatsApp channel to promote campaign and reach Latino voters

It is about the first time a US presidential campaign has launched a WhatsApp channel, one of the tools most used by Latinos in the country.

The channel, called “Latinos con Harris-Walz,” seeks to reach Latino voters in a novel way with messages that reflect the Hispanic community that already exists on the platform and, in addition, aims to be a powerful way to combat misinformation.

Julie Chavez Rodriguez, who runs the campaign for Harris and vice presidential candidate Governor Tim Walz, was in charge of announcing the launch of the channel with a vertical video, adapted specifically for cell phones.

“This is the first channel of its kind for a presidential campaign, and it’s where you’ll be able to get behind-the-scenes information, learn about what Kamala Harris and Tim Walz are doing for our Latino families, and much more,” explains Julie Chavez Rodriguez, granddaughter of legendary union leader Cesar Chavez, in the video.

As the campaign explained in a statement, On the WhatsApp channel, users will be able to access daily voice notes, videos and statements from representatives and allies of the Harris-Walz campaign.

The campaign’s Hispanic media director, Maca Casado, said in a statement that New WhatsApp channel confirms Democrats’ commitment to engage with Latino voters on “what is at stake in these elections.”

“While Donald Trump disparages our community at every opportunity, constantly insulting and denigrating us, Vice President Harris and Governor Walz know the power of our community and fight every day for the issues that matter most to Latino voters,” said Casado.

The launch of the channel WhatsApp is important because the Hispanic community is one of the most used to communicate and share news.

According to a Pew survey published in February of this year, 54% of Hispanic adults use WhatsApp, a percentage that only compares with 51% of Asian adults. This contrasts with 31% of African-American adults and even lower percentages among whites (20%).

The launch of this new tool comes on the same day that the Democratic National Convention begins in Chicago, where Harris will accept the nomination for President.
