Muscat ∙ The star is now Kallummakaya among expatriate Malayalis in Oman. Also known as Katka and Nwaunika, the sea creature that grows on rocks in the sea is becoming a delicacy in the kitchens and restaurants of Malayalee families and bachelors. Kallummakaya is obtained from the sea shores in different regions of Oman. Now it is seen that Malayalees who are used to collecting and cooking kallummakaya in the country come to such places and collect easily available kallummakaya ‘for free’.

Most of the Malayalis come to Al Ashkara and Al Sakhla where stone fruit is widely grown. Apart from this, Kallummakaya can be found in coastal areas in different parts of the country, but most people go to Ashkara. Al Ashkara is now a trending travel spot among expatriates.

During Oman National Day holidays, hundreds of Malayalis went to Al Ashkara to collect stones. All returned with large quantities of stone. After watching its vlogs and reels, many people drove back to Ashkara last weekend. Those who left are leaving again in larger groups of people. Many people are waiting to go to collect Kallummakaya in the coming days.

During the holidays, many people travel with their children and family to search for Kallummakaya. They share their memories of going to collect stones from the country in their childhood and pass on the experiences to their children. Some even train children to collect stones. Many share the joy of having such experiences in exile as well.

Ashkara can be reached by traveling 320 km (about four hours) from Muscat. From here, one can reach Al Sakhla after another 45 km. At the same time, it is only possible to collect kallummakaya in the sea during low tide. Stone flakes are removed by stirring with sharp objects and wearing gloves.

With the availability of Kallummakaya, Malayalee’s dinner tables are now filled with Kallummakaya, Spicy Kallummakaya Fry, Toran and Kallummakaya Biryani and Kallummakaya Pickle. Apart from consumption at home, many people sell them to the needy, cooked or uncooked. Kallummak dishes are also readily available in restaurants. Expatriate Malayalis in Oman are in a stone-cold vibe.
