Because Josef Meinhart (ÖVP), the previous mayor of Weißenkirchen, resigned in August, the people of Weißenkirchen have to elect a new one on January 14th. Since yesterday it has been clear that they have a choice of (at least) two candidates: After the 25-year-old Josef Rauchzauner entered the race for the ÖVP, Johann Kalleitner (FPÖ) also announced his candidacy yesterday.
The 52-year-old farmer has been involved in local politics for 20 years. He has been parliamentary group chairman since 2009 and community board member since 2015. In 2021 he ran in the mayoral election. Although he was unable to prevail once morest the then long-term mayor Josef Meinhart, he still received 33 percent of the vote.
“I won’t make any big election promises,” says Kalleitner. “We are a community of a manageable size that has to manage its financial resources well. That’s why we need to approach investments and projects carefully. The priority is to do the homework in the areas of infrastructure, school and kindergarten operations and water supply.” The liberal explains that he doesn’t see the mayor’s office as a one-man show. “Most decisions are made jointly in the various committees and in the local council. We have a good relationship here, regardless of factions.” A mayor should be someone who takes people’s concerns seriously and brings regarding solutions to problems in an uncomplicated and unbureaucratic manner.
