Moscow. June 6th INTERFAX.RU – The dam of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station in the Kherson region collapsed on Tuesday night due to the collapse of one support, a representative of the emergency services of the region said.

“The dam might not stand it: one support collapsed, and flooding began,” he said, adding that there were no attacks on the hydroelectric power station at night.

The Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station has been operating since the 1950s. It provides regulation of the Dnieper flow for power supply, irrigation and water supply of arid southern regions and navigation from Kherson to Zaporozhye. From it begins the North Crimean Canal, which provides the peninsula with Dnieper water.

In October last year, it was reported regarding the release of water from the Kakhovskaya HPP amid constant shelling to reduce the area of flooding in case of damage to the dam.

According to the latest data, the station does not generate electricity.
