PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) (KAI) targets that by 2024 it will modify 60 economy trains with long seats facing perpendicularly into more comfortable New Generation Economy Trains.

“KAI will continue to increase the number of train modifications, so that more and more train facilities have improved comfort. We hope that public interest will increase in using mass train transportation that is safe, comfortable, secure and on time,” said KAI Daop 1 Jakarta Public Relations Manager Ixfan Hendriwintoko in Jakarta, Thursday.

According to him, in 2025, his party will modify 52 other trains. Ixfan said that the modifications were carried out by KAI’s railway facilities maintenance facility in Manggarai, South Jakarta, namely Balai Yasa Manggarai.

According to him, economy trains which previously had a capacity of 106 seats with a 3-2 formation, perpendicular backrests and facing each other, will gradually be replaced with economy trains with a capacity of 80 seats with a 2-2 formation facing or not facing each other.

To increase passenger comfort, the type of seat used has been replaced with a captain seat type which can be tilted (reclining) and can be adjusted so that it is in the same direction as the train or facing another seat (revolving).

The modified New Generation Economic Train is also equipped with a public information display system (PIDS) which can display the current time and temperature.

“Improving service on economy class trains is a manifestation of KAI’s commitment to listening to the needs and input of customers, to be able to continue to improve service and customer experience so that KAI remains relevant with current developments,” said Ixfan.

This Thursday, KAI operated the New Generation Economy Train on KA (106) Gaya Baru Malam Selatan bound for Pasarsenen-Surabaya Gubeng Station.

Previously, KAI launched the New Generation Economic Train on the Jayabaya Train for the Pasarsenen–Malang route on September 26 2023. (Z-8)
