A young boy’s life took a terrifying turn in Palm Duren, East Jakarta, on Friday, January 17, 2025. While riding on the back of a motorbike with a family employee, the boy became involved in a collision with a motorbike bearing red license plates.
Instead of seeking immediate medical attention, the perpetrator involved in the initial accident attempted to resolve the situation amicably. Though, concerned residents urged the perpetrator to prioritize the boy’s well-being by taking him to his family frist. The perpetrator eventually agreed and transported the victim.
“In the middle of the road, the victim was moved by the reported party so that the victim was sitting at the back end of the motorbike seat,” explained East Jakarta Metro Police Chief Commissioner Nicolas Ary Lilipaly, confirming the incident on Saturday, January 25th. According to Lilipaly, while riding, the perpetrator’s erratic movements caused the boy to shift uncomfortably. In a shocking display of recklessness, the perpetrator proceeded to kick the boy, sending him tumbling to the ground.
“when the victim fell, the Reported Party also looked back to see the victim, but the Reported Party did not stop and instead the Reported Party continued driving his vehicle and disappeared,” Lilipaly stated, emphasizing the callous disregard shown by the perpetrator.
Tragically, no witnesses observed the perpetrator’s actions. Those present, positioned ahead, were unaware of the unfolding horror behind them.

East Jakarta Rampage: Community Reacts to Reckless Motorbike Driver Kicking Child
Interview with advocacy group representative Sarah Luna
Sarah Luna, representative of the citizens’ advocacy group SafeStreets Jakarta, joins us today to discuss the recent incident in Palm Duren where a young boy was kicked off a motorbike by an individual following a collision. Sarah, thank you for speaking with us. How has your association responded to this horrific event?
Sarah Luna:
It’s a shame, truly. This sort of brazen violence, especially against a child, is completely unacceptable. SafeStreets Jakarta condemns this perpetrator’s actions in the strongest terms. This incident highlights the urgent need for greater road safety education and stricter law enforcement to deter such reckless and dangerous behavior.
You mentioned the importance of road safety education. Could you elaborate on that? What specific measures do you believe could help prevent similar situations in the future?
Sarah Luna:
It starts with instilling responsible driving habits from a young age. We need complete driver education programs that prioritize safety awareness, empathy for pedestrians and other road users, and the consequences of reckless driving. We also advocate for stricter penalties for traffic violations, particularly those involving intentional violence or endangerment.
“
the police have confirmed that there were no witnesses to the actual kicking of the child. this is a deeply concerning aspect of the incident. What message does this send about the potential for such actions to go unpunished?
Sarah Luna:
It highlights a disturbing reality: that violence can occur with impunity if it’s not witnessed or captured. We need to encourage a culture of vigilance and bystanders stepping up to document and report any suspicious or dangerous behavior. We also need to empower law enforcement to thoroughly investigate such cases, regardless of the lack of initial eyewitness accounts.
what is the collective responsibility of the community to prevent such tragic incidents from occurring again?
Sarah Luna:
It takes a village. We need to foster a sense of shared responsibility for road safety. That means being mindful pedestrians, responsible drivers, and engaged community members who speak out against reckless behavior. We need to work together with law enforcement, advocacy groups, and educational institutions to create a safer and more caring environment for everyone, especially our children.
