KAA Gent vs Standard: A Comedy of Errors
Welcome, ladies and gentlemen, to the theatre of dreams, otherwise known as the Planet Group Arena, where KAA Gent threw a five-course goal feast—complete with two appetizers, a main course of disaster, and a dessert that left Standard lying flat on the pitch as if they’d just been told their Netflix account had expired!
First Half – The Rollercoaster of Emotions
- 5′ – Doelpunt! Tsuyoshi Watanabe gets the party started with the first goal. It’s like someone left the door wide open, and Watanabe strolled in with a party hat on. 1-0!
- 11′ – Yellow card for Sotiris Alexandropoulos, who must’ve thought he was auditioning for a part in *Fast & Furious: The Soccer Edition*.
- 38′ – *Verv.* Noah Fadiga, or as the headline nearly said, Noah Fatigue! Poor lad had slipped into the arms of the coach like a toddler in a tantrum. Thankfully, he made a return—unlike some of Standard’s tactics!
- 41′ – Goal! Max Dean makes it 2-0. He had all the finesse of a ballet dancer on grass. When he scores, it’s a thing of beauty. If only the same could be said for the defending…
By the interval, you’d be forgiven for thinking Standard was less of a team and more of a charity—handing out goals like candy at a Halloween party.
The Second Half – More Goals and a Hint of Panic
- 51′ – Goal! Archie Brown adds insult to injury. 3-0, and suddenly it feels less like a game and more like a demolition derby.
- 59′ – Max Dean strikes again! 4-0! That ball went in with all the conviction of a kid shouting, “But I want to!” when told to go to bed!
- 89′ – Goal! Gilles De Meyer puts the cherry on top with a fifth. STANDARD? More like STANDBY, because they were completely paralyzed! 5-0!
Max Dean—what a star! He popped up like a game of Whac-A-Mole just when Standard thought they’d caught a break. Meanwhile, Standard spent the match looking like they’d just woken up on the wrong side of the pitch.
Key Moments and Head-Scratchers
- Man of the Match: Max Dean—the only player who seemed to remember there’s a net at the end of the pitch and not just an inviting gap for friendly fire!
- Key Moment: Brown’s curling goal six minutes into the second half, like a chef adding poison to an already overcooked meal. Say goodbye to any hopes of a comeback!
- Oef-moment: The Fadiga inclusion. We saw a player collapsing on the sidelines—thanks for the scare, lads! It was like watching the final season of a beloved show; you just never know who’s going to drop!
Conversations in the Aftermath
Max Dean: “We knew we needed this! Five goals and a clean sheet—perfect really! My goal? Beauty! Sometimes it’s just about hitting it right. You know, like when the coffee hits just right on a Monday morning, and you’re suddenly a functioning human.”
Marlon Fossey (Standard): “Emotions are high right now! We had the worst start possible. It was like putting your foot in the wrong shoe before a 10K run. Why can’t we seize our chances?”
Wouter Vrancken (KAA Gent): “I was shocked by Fadiga, so glad he’s okay. But the boys? They were good today. Like a well-cooked steak—no chance left on the plate!”
In Conclusion
So there you have it. KAA Gent managed to bag a resounding 5-0 victory (“lost in the sauce” as Rowan would say), and as for Standard? They’ve got some serious thinking to do. Or at least a strong coffee to help with the next match!
Football is a funny old game—sometimes it’s all tactics, and sometimes it’s just a slapstick comedy. And on this day, KAA Gent were the stars of the show, while Standard just wished they’d picked an entirely different performance! Until next time, folks—keep your goals on target and your yellow cards at bay!

KAA Gent takes the breather in our competition with a resounding victory. In the Planet Group arena, Ghent quickly took the lead, Standard then allowed themselves to be led to the slaughter and conceded another 4 goals. A blemish on the Ghent party evening was the incident with Noah Fadiga, who suddenly collapsed, but fortunately Ghent quickly came with “reassuring news”.
AA Gent – Standard in a nutshell
On September 29, against OH Leuven, it was the last time Max Dean scored, tonight he scored for two pots. With one great kick and one good look, the mini-Vardy helped Ghent to the big score.
Those who had hoped for Standard’s return were robbed of that dream six minutes into the second half. With a beautiful curl, Brown popped the books at him.
After half an hour, Noah Fadiga fell into the arms of coach Vrancken. Not because of his known heart problems, but as a result of a collision, the club reported afterwards. In any case, a scary image, but a moment later the Buffalo was able to stand up and walk to the locker room.
Football sometimes comes second, we realized halfway through the first half. Such a fall by Fadiga made people fear the worst, reminiscent of the incidents of Anthony Van Loo or Christian Erikssen. Fortunately, the Buffalo quickly turned right again and continued.
Having dealt with the most important thing, we could move on to the side issue. Ghent was already trying to throw away its doubts after five minutes, and Matthieu Epolo felt the pressure increasing on his shoulders again.
Watanabe’s header was catchable, but the goalkeeper clumsily let the ball go past the line before pushing it away. No camera could confirm, but the line judge ruled: goal!
Good football and chances were rare for Standard throughout the match, much to Leko’s dissatisfaction.
After the Fadiga incident, it was the ever-hungry Max Dean who woke up the entire stadium. A clever pass from Delorge and a ditto volley from the Englishman put Ghent at 2-0, more than rightly so.
Pass freely
Ivan Leko saw his men wandering and hoped to get some experience into the team with Doumbia after the break. A wonderful curl from Brown pushed the match to the final decision after five minutes. On the hour mark, experienced Doumbia gave the ideal ball to Sonko with a particularly naive pass. The reborn Swede hit the crossbar for the second time of the evening, but Dean followed well and worked inside.
Ghent subsequently saw that it was good and, under the guidance of the audience, started playing free passes. No pressure, no effort from the visitors.
Vrancken rewarded Gilles De Meyer with a debut in the competition, with success. Thanks to Epolo, De Meyer secured the forfeit score. With a second mistake of the evening, the goalkeeper helped the ball over the back line, because De Meyer did not actually deliver more than a failed cross.
Ghent seems to have restored confidence. After four games with only one goal, today there were five in one game and a certain place in the top six. Standard, on the other hand, has completely lost the north.
Max Dean (AA Gent): “Of course we wanted this kind of score. After the past matches we wanted to show something, five goals and a clean sheet are perfect. My goal was nice, to be honest. We know about Mathias ( Delorge, ed.) that he can pass great, so for me it was just a matter of hitting the ball correctly. As a striker you sometimes know that a kick is going in.”
Marlon Fossey (Standard): “My emotions are very present at the moment, so difficult to analyze now. I think we had the worst possible start, when you play away from home you have to start better. Afterwards a lot of goals were our fault, not so much to their credit. That’s the most frustrating thing.”
Leko: “We think wrong, results must come first”
Wouter Vrancken (AA Ghent): “Like everyone else, I was very shocked by Fadiga, he fell into my arms. I am not a doctor, so I am not going to make any statements. I am happy that he is stable, that is the most important thing.”
“During the second half it was still hanging over me, but the boys responded well. We were just good today. I don’t think we gave away a chance. We stayed concentrated, we switched well collectively. We will see if this is the beginning more, it is always nice to go into the international break like this. Then we can work hard for two weeks and get some rest.”
Ivan Leko (Standard): “This is a difficult place for any team to come to, but this was not our match. We came here to play. In the first half we still try to create, but it is difficult to get to the first chances to concede a goal. At the same time, we don’t seize our chances.”
“We are too emotional today to talk to the boys, but my first instinct is to focus more on the basics. We think wrong before we start the match, maybe we want to do it too nicely. That is wrong, the result will come first. Then no one will care about how you play.”

End
Visser thinks injury time is unnecessary and blows the whistle immediately! Standard goes down inglorious and weak against a cheerful Ghent. The all-powerful Ghent team scored five goals tonight, with a brace for Dean. The whole of Ghent (and by extension football) is especially happy that Fadiga appears to be unscathed after his faint in the first half.
A fifth too
Oh Epolo, how little faith can you have? A failed cross from debutant Gilles De Meyer should be an easy ball for Epolo, but he simply lets the ball slip through his hands. That boy isn’t going to sleep well.
The ‘hey’s follow each other in the Planet Group Arena. As extra time approaches, the people of Ghent are given plenty of space to leisurely tap the ball around.
Great image: Max Dean gets angry at the change, but then receives the applause. A real warrior, a real winner.
With Gudjohnsen on hand to replace him, Dean goes all out to claim a third goal. The substitute has been waiting for a few minutes, but the ball just won’t cross the sideline.
Who still wants to run at Standard? It’s not that it matters much at 4-0, but Ghent can play around without any problems. There is not much left of a fiery Standard.
Araujo puts Epolo to work again. The Portuguese immediately takes over a falling ball and whips it straight towards the goalkeeper, who clamps it well. The result is certain, the pace is therefore leisurely.
We note another chance for Standard. Badamosi does it half-heartedly and kicks a training ball towards Daniel Schmidt.
