Thiruvananthapuram: Suburban rail project rejected by UDF as an alternative to rail. In 2017, Mathrubhumi News received the document rejecting the railway project.

K. Former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy had yesterday announced that the alternative to rail is suburban rail. The idea of suburban rail was mooted during the UDF government which ruled till 2016. The idea of a high-speed rail, which was in its infancy, was later replaced by the concept of a suburban rail. And conducted a feasibility study.

The UDF intended the suburban rail to be a rail service from Thiruvananthapuram to Kannur at a cost of Rs 10,000 crore. In the first phase, it was decided to run the train service from Thiruvananthapuram to Chengannur on the existing railway line.

It was submitted before the Railway Board. But during the last Pinarayi government, the reply of the railways was received in 2017. The Railways rejected the project and clarified that service was not possible on the existing route. The Railways also suggested that a new line be constructed to run the suburban rail service.

According to the UDF, K. Railways do not accept that suburban rail is an alternative to rail. Even if Kerala goes ahead with the suburban rail, it will have to build a new line. Therefore, it is clear from this letter that the Railway Board has already rejected the plan put forward by former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy.
