K. Starkevičius: my first orders will be to reduce the bureaucratic burden on farms Business

“In the very first days, I will sign orders that will specifically be related to reducing bureaucracy. This will bring at least this positive emotional load to the farmers, because they have talked about it more than once,” K. Starkevičius told Žinių radio on Thursday.

“The support systems were simplified, it was simple and clear. Now there are definitely a lot of things that I wonder why happened that are easy to fix. If you have the political will, and the employees are all excellent, if the politician knows what he wants, then the bureaucracy and civil servants will implement it,” he said.

According to K. Starkevičius, it will be necessary to change some of the orders of the Minister of Agriculture, and possibly to initiate changes to laws.

The politician said he plans to promote generational change in farms.

“It is very important for the youth to return and take over the farms. This is already happening”, said K. Starkevičius.

“There will definitely be changes, you can calm down (…) farmers, and not only farmers, are more confident to return to Lithuania. If those who emigrated want to return to the farm,” the new minister added.

K. Starkevičius also assured that he will seek to strengthen cooperation with non-governmental organizations, to reduce their division, which is primarily felt between two umbrella farmers’ organizations – the Council of Agriculture and the Chamber of Agriculture.

“I will go around districts, regions and I will first invite the ministry to my place. We will discuss with all non-governmental organizations, because they are divided, but all of them are necessary and significant for the village. We will look for (…) solutions to the problems that I now know”, said the minister.

The 68-year-old Chairman of the Economic Committee of the Seimas, K.Starkevičius, has been proposed to be appointed Minister of Agriculture in place of Kęstutis Navickos.

K. Starkevičius is serving his fifth term in the Seimas, in 2008-2012 he already held the position of Minister of Agriculture.

The politician is a farmer with his family – they work about 400 hectares of land, of which 130 hectares are his own land, which he inherited from his parents, and he rents the rest. The family grows grain crops and beef cattle.

K. Starkevičius has previously worked as the head of Kaunas County, a member of the Kaunas City Municipal Council, vice mayor, and since 1996 – a member of the Conservative Party.
