The domestic shipbuilding industry has been receiving active orders since the beginning of the year. Following Hanwha Ocean’s order for two very large ammonia carriers (VLAC), HD Korea Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering also secured an additional ship contract worth KRW 491.1 billion.

On the 22nd, Hanwha Ocean announced that it had received an order worth 331.2 billion won for two very large ammonia carriers (VLAC) from a shipowner in Oceania. Hanwha Ocean has received orders for seven VLAC ships in the past two months.

This VLAC, ordered by Hanwha Ocean, can transport 93,000 ㎥ of ammonia. This ship is equipped with eco-friendly technologies such as Hanwha Ocean’s self-developed smart ship platform ‘HS4’ and the latest carbon reduction technology, axial generator motors. The vessel will be built at the Geoje plant and is scheduled to be delivered to the shipowner in the second half of 2027.

Hanwha Ocean is focusing on developing alternative fuels and eco-friendly technologies to lead the era of carbon-free shipping. The plan is to gradually reduce greenhouse gas emissions and commercialize zero-carbon ships with no carbon emissions, such as ammonia propulsion, direct hydrogen propulsion, and hydrogen fuel cell propulsion.

HD Korea Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering, the intermediate holding company of HD Hyundai Shipbuilding, also received orders for three ships worth 491.1 billion won on this day. On this day, the company announced that it had recently signed a contract to build three very large ammonia carriers (VLAC) with a shipping company in Central and South America. The ordered vessel will be built by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries in Ulsan and delivered by June 2028.

HD Korea Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering is active in the market by continuously increasing its order performance. This month, the company signed contracts with shipping companies in Europe, Oceania, Asia, and the Middle East to build a total of 27 ships, including 2 LNG carriers, 15 PC ships, and 10 LPG/ammonia carriers.

As the price of new ships continues to rise, the strategy of Korean shipbuilders to selectively win orders for high value-added ships such as eco-friendly ships also appears to be gaining momentum. According to Clarkson Research, a British shipbuilding and shipping market analysis agency, the global newbuilding price index has recently reached its highest level in 15 years since December 2008.
