In the first quarter of this year, global electric vehicle (EV, PHEV, HEV)-mounted batteries sold by the three domestic companies showed double-digit growth. However, the market share of the three companies declined due to the advance of Chinese companies.

According to SNE Research, a market research firm specializing in energy on the 2nd, the total amount of battery energy for electric vehicles registered in countries around the world in the first quarter of this year was 95.1 gigawatt hours (GWh), doubling the level of the same period last year.

SNE Research explained that the market uptrend, which started in the third quarter of 2020, has continued.

Chinese companies, including CATL (35.0%), the No. 1 market share, and BYD (15.9%), the third person, led the market growth.

CATL and BYD’s battery usage for electric vehicles in the first quarter rose 137.7% and 220.4%, respectively, from the same period last year.

The three domestic companies are LG Energy Solutions[373220]In terms of consumption, it ranked second with 15.1GWh, an increase of 39.1% compared to the same period last year.

LG Energy Solution’s growth was driven mainly by strong sales of Tesla Model Y (made in China), Volkswagen ID.4, and Audi Q4 e-tron.

However, the market share was 15.9%, which was lower than the same period last year (22.1%).

SK On’s battery usage recorded 6.3GWh, a 141.9% increase from the same period last year, solidifying its fifth place in market share.

In SK On, sales growth of Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia Niro EV and EV6 led to high growth. The market share also increased slightly from 5.3% last year to 6.6% this year.

Samsung SDI[006400]Battery usage increased by 26.2% from the same period last year thanks to brisk sales of BMW iX and Fiat 500. However, the market share fell by 2 percentage points from 5.8% to 3.8%.

The market share of the three domestic companies was 26.3% in the first quarter, down 6.9 percentage points from the same period last year.

Most Japanese companies, including Panasonic, also showed growth rates far below the market average, and their market shares declined.

Meanwhile, global EV battery usage in March this year was 41.4GWh, 1.7 times higher than in the same month last year.

However, SNE Research analyzed that it remains to be seen how problems such as the Chinese lockdown, Ukraine crisis, and semiconductor supply and demand will affect electric vehicle sales in the future.
