In a statement on Thursday evening, Juventus confirmed that they have started a process of withdrawing from the Super League project, leaving FC Barcelona and Real Madrid in the process. This decision should be put into perspective with the current negotiations between the Turin club and UEFA.

The Super League and Juventus are over. Thursday evening, through a press release, the Turin leaders formalized their request for a definitive exit from this project, thus leaving FC Barcelona and Real Madrid as the last “survivors” of this tournament imagined by 12 clubs and death- born in April 2021.

Last June, Juventus had already expressed its intention to Spanish clubs to leave the Super League. “Following the discussions, and taking into account certain differences on the interpretation of the agreements applicable to the Super League project, Juventus confirms that it has started the procedure for the withdrawal of the aforementioned project”, indicated this Thursday evening the press release of the old lady club.

In connection with the negotiations

Juventus recall that they must obtain the “prior consent” of the clubs still involved. This decision is not surprising, given the sanctions that weigh on the Bianconeri. In addition to those which could apply to rebellious clubs, decisions must soon be taken by UEFA against Juventus for “potential breaches of the club license and financial fair play”. This is another case to the one that earned the club several penalty points in Italy.

In recent days, the Italian press reported that UEFA and Juventus had reached an agreement. Seventh in Serie A, the Italian club is qualified for the Europa League Conference but should agree to be excluded from this competition to be able to claim to play European competitions again from the 2024-2025 season.

For Juventus, leaving the Super League project therefore looks like an easing of relations with UEFA. In the meantime, the shortfall from an absence in the Champions League this season amounts to 120 million euros for Juventus. A qualification for the most prestigious European competition promises to be vital for the coming year. Staying in the Super League project could have been worth a five-year ban from the body.
