Juventus Turin wants to get out of the controversial Super League project and throws captain Leonardo Bonucci out of the door. The club has initiated the exit process from the project following discussions with the two remaining founding members, Real Madrid and FC Barcelona, the Serie A club said. According to media reports on Friday, Bonucci was excluded from the squad. This was reportedly communicated to the 36-year-old defender on vacation.

According to a report by “Gazzetta dello Sport”, the European champion should no longer be allowed to train with the team. The 121-time Italian national player is no longer participating in the planned trip to the USA. A year before the end of his contract in 2024, Bonucci now has to look for a new club in order to secure the hoped-for nomination for the 2024 European Championship in Germany with match practice.

Bonucci has played for Juventus since 2010, with one break from 2017 to 2018 when he came on for Milan. He was a top performer for a long time both in the club and in the national team. Last season, the 36-year-old only played a supporting role under coach Massimiliano Allegri. Even in the national team, the defender was no longer undisputed. In 2021 he formed the central defense when the Italians won the European Championship title together with Giorgio Chiellini, who was two years his senior.

The exit from the Super League will only take effect “if this has been approved beforehand by Real Madrid, FC Barcelona and the other clubs involved in the Super League project,” said the club’s statement. Juventus, Real and Barcelona are the only remaining founding members.

The project failed in its original form in April 2021. UEFA and the fans had put up massive resistance. Of the twelve top clubs that initially sought a spin-off, nine withdrew within a few hours.
