We do not yet know if the next federal election in Canada will take place before or following the American presidential campaign in 2024, but we already know that Justin Trudeau will try to take advantage of Donald Trump’s return to the fore.
In recent years, Justin Trudeau has not hesitated to scare Canadians by brandishing the scarecrow of Donald Trump. It allowed him to put on his Captain Canada costume.
Moreover, to define his main opponent, Pierre Poilievre, the Liberal leader will not hesitate to make links with the former American president.
New head of diplomacy
When Donald Trump took control of the White House in early 2017, Justin Trudeau appointed Chrystia Freeland as Minister of Foreign Affairs.
Clearly, this changing of the guard at Canadian diplomacy was a reaction to the election of the new president.
Cleverly, we saw how the Trudeau team was able to take advantage of the renegotiations of the North American Free Trade Agreement. Expectations were so low.
We had to lose everything once morest Donald Trump. Thus, Mrs. Freeland passed for a heroine.
Today, six years later, the Trudeau government does not have the same aura on the international scene. We do not feel that Canada is playing a leading role in hot issues around the world, and the softness towards China leaves us on our appetite with regard to the credibility we have with our allies such as the States -United.
Before playing the Trump card
It is clear that Donald Trump will be at the heart of the Liberals’ strategies. Comparisons between Pierre Poilievre and Trump will be commonplace before and during the next campaign.
But, before playing the Trump card, Justin Trudeau must put other elements of his game on the table.
It should start with a public inquiry into Chinese interference, followed by a reshuffle of his cabinet and possibly the prorogation of the session.
It is an almost obligatory passage for the Liberal leader. He cannot continue on the current path.
Justin Trudeau is no doubt eager to talk regarding Donald Trump, but before he will have to shuffle his cards.
