The Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau and his wife, Sophie Gregoire, have announced that they have decided to end their marriage of 18 years. “After many deep and difficult conversations, we have decided to part ways,” Trudeau said on Instagram. The two “signed a legal separation agreement,” his office said in a statement.
“As always, we remain a close family with a deep love and respect for each other and for all that we have done and will continue to do. For the well-being of our children, we ask that you respect our privacy. Thank you,” says the message posted by the Canadian prime minister on Instagram.
For her part, Sophie Grégoire published the same text on her account but in French.
According to the Canadian newspaper Globe and Mail, the couple will share custody of their three children. The Prime Minister will continue to reside at Rideau Cottage with the children, while Sophie has already moved her to another property in Ottawa. During the days that Trudeau is away, she will stay at Rideau Cottage to be with her children.
The separation marks a historic event, being the first time a Canadian Prime Minister has experienced this situation since Trudeau’s late father, Pierre Trudeau, separated from Margaret Trudeau and finally divorced in 1984, during his last months in office.
