Judge Aileen Cannon on Tuesday indefinitely postponed the date of the Florida trial once morest former President Donald Trump in the criminal case of mishandling confidential documents found in his possession following leaving the White House.
The judge’s decision makes it highly unlikely that Trump’s Florida trial will take place before the November presidential election.
In her order, the judge argued that prior litigation, including disagreements over how classified information is used during the trial, should be awaited. She also noted that because of “the myriad of pretrial issues” that remain to be resolved, “it would be imprudent and inconsistent” to consider the various motions filed by the parties closed.
Lawyers for the former president, who faces a total of four criminal cases in the United States, had asked for the trial to be postponed until August, while the prosecution requested it be held earlier.
Other cases facing Trump
This is not the only litigation Trump faces. The Republican must answer in court to 91 criminal charges once morest him spread across four criminal cases, including the one arising from the 2021 assault on the Capitol by his supporters, when they tried to interrupt the legislative process to certify Biden’s victory in 2020.
In addition, he faces charges in New York for alleged irregular payments to porn actress Stormy Daniels, a trial that is ongoing.
Daniels said Tuesday in her testimony as a witness in Trump’s criminal trial that she hates the Republican politician and wants him to go to jail if he is found guilty.
Trump faces 34 charges in the case, including falsifying business documents to help cover up his extramarital affair with Daniels, and if convicted might face several years in prison.
